Since the late 1990s, it has been possible for private companies to apply for a licence to carry mail in Lithuania. Currently (2016), about 70 companies are licensed for private mail distribution.
In Lithuania, mail carried by private companies is not franked with stamps, but receives a postmark with the name of the company and the licence number. This has the same function as the postmark of the state postal service. As with the latter, arrival postmarks are not used.
